Tesla - statistics & facts

In 2025, Tesla ranked as the most valuable brand in the automotive industry worldwide. This came despite the company navigating some serious financial and reputational challenges. On the financial side, Tesla's total revenue  in 2025 dropped for the first time since Elon Musk became the company's CEO in 2008, declining to below 95 billion U.S. dollars. Underpinning this was a decrease of over six billion U.S. dollars in automotive sales – the main revenue stream - which was not offset by the slight rise in revenue from energy generation, storage, services, and others. Furthermore, the net income that had risen so dramatically between 2020 and 2023 decreased for the second year in a row, totaling around a quarter of the 2023 figure.

How has Tesla's reputation been affected by Musk's politics?

The criticism of Musk's involvement in the Trump administration has undoubtedly affected the wider reputation of Tesla. This is exemplified by the "I bought this before Elon went crazy" bumper sticker that is now often seen on Tesla vehicles. However, perhaps more interestingly, the shift in public perception of Tesla as a progressive force has also been extended to environmental issues. Despite being a company renowned as a pioneer for electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla's sustainability perception value was estimated to have dropped from roughly 18 billion to about 10 billion U.S. dollars between 2023 and 2025. One major issue underpinning this was the amount of freshwater withdrawn for Tesla's manufacturing more than tripling between 2020 and 2024.

How have Tesla's competitors caught up?

Alongside reputational struggles, a major challenge for Tesla has been the growth of the EV industry in China. After years of topping the global best-selling EV brand ranking, Tesla was overtaken by BYD in 2022. Since then, the Asian automaker has widened this gap, having sold over double the EV units recorded by Tesla in 2025. When looking at the best-selling plug-in vehicle model list from 2025, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 continued to sell well, claiming the first and third spots, respectively. However, BYD claiming eight of the top 15 places displayed the brand's strength in diversity and affordability.

How has Tesla fared under the Trump administration?

Even before the start of President Trump's second term in office, Tesla has consistently generated around half of its revenue from the U.S. market. Ostensibly, the tariffs imposed on imported automobiles would appear to have strengthened Tesla's position in the domestic market, however, the sourcing of foreign-made parts has thrown a spanner in the works. Furthermore, the reduction in incentive policies, which includes the removal of a multi-thousand U.S. dollar tax break for new EV purchases, has made the switch away from gasoline-propelled vehicles for many more expensive. This has been reflected in the noticeable decline in the monthly market share of battery-electric vehicles in the United States. While new models have been announced for release in 2026, such as the Tesla Cybercab, navigating volatile policy shifts, declining profitability, and growing competition will be no easy task.
