The UK economy - statistics & facts
The United Kingdom entered 2026 as one of the world's largest economies, with UK gross domestic product reaching approximately 2.82 trillion British pounds in 2025. The headline figure, however, obscures persistent structural challenges. Annual GDP growth came in at just 1.3 percent in 2025 and one percent in 2024, barely enough to absorb a decade of low investment, sluggish productivity, and a labor market now showing new signs of strain.
A labor market beginning to crack
For much of the post-pandemic period, the labor market was the UK economy's most reliable bright spot. That resilience has begun to erode. The unemployment rate climbed to 4.9 percent in June 2026, one of the highest readings since 2021, as recent changes to employer tax policy coincided with a cooling in hiring conditions. Some relief came through wages: median full-time earnings reached approximately 39,000 pounds in 2025, up from 35,000 in 2023, after years of cost-of-living pressure.
Brexit and the search for new markets
The European Union remains the dominant destination for UK exports, accounting for half of the total in 2023, and exit from the Single Market has added friction that shows no sign of easing. The UK leaned into its services trade surplus in response, which reached 52,726 million pounds in the second quarter of 2026, driven by 141.8 billion pounds in service exports. To diversify beyond Europe, the government pursued new trade partnerships, including the UK-India Free Trade Agreement signed in July 2025 and ongoing negotiations with the United States and Gulf states.
Inflation receding, but the fiscal burden is not
Inflation peaked at 11.1 percent in October 2022 and has since retreated to 2.9 percent in July 2026. Public spending stood at 44.6 percent of GDP in 2025/26, up from 39 percent in 2019/20, while the national debt-to-GDP ratio reached 102 percent in 2025. Higher spending has not relieved service pressure: over 193,000 patients in England were waiting more than 52 weeks for NHS elective treatment in February 2025. The trade-off between consolidation and public services remains unresolved.
Growth without prosperity for most
The sharpest verdict on the UK's recent economic performance is that aggregate growth has not translated into rising living standards. GDP per capita was 40,537 pounds in 2025, the same as the level recorded in 2022, as two intervening years of decline erased whatever headline growth delivered. This reflects a long-running productivity problem. When GDP expands but output per worker does not keep pace, gains spread thin across a growing population. The UK has not resolved that problem, and until it does, growth figures will continue to rise on paper while most households experience something closer to stagnation.
